Arizona AG, DOJ accuse egg producers of price scheming as companies agree to settlement
Summary
The U.S. Department of Justice, together with more than a dozen states including Arizona, has accused major egg producers—Cal‑Maine Foods, Versova, and Hickman’s Egg Ranch, Arizona’s largest producer—of secretly coordinating to raise egg prices from June 2022 through March 2025. At the peak, the average cost of a dozen eggs reached $6.23, compared with about $2.19 today. While the companies have not admitted wrongdoing, the settlement requires them to pay $3.3 million to the states and to donate 53 million eggs to food banks and community groups. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said the deal holds the firms accountable and helps those most in need, though some advocates argue the settlement falls short of restoring consumer savings. The agreement still awaits court approval.
