IKEA customers sue for share of Trump tariff refunds
Summary
IKEA customers in the United States have filed a proposed class-action lawsuit seeking refunds for higher prices charged by the Swedish company before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Pennsylvania, argues that it would be unjust for IKEA to retain the overcharges because the tariffs were illegal and the company passed those costs along to consumers. The Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump overstepped his authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose the tariffs. IKEA and thousands of other companies are eligible to seek refunds from the U.S. government for unlawful tariffs, but consumers have no direct mechanism to recover the money. The plaintiff, a South Carolina resident, alleges she was overcharged in July 2025 when she spent $859 on a loft bed, and that IKEA increased the price of some sofas, including one whose cost rose $50 in August. Costco, Amazon, Nike, and FedEx are also facing similar lawsuits.
