Slavko Curuvija Foundation ordered to pay over 1 million dinars following lawsuit by former State Security officers

N1
A Belgrade court ordered the Slavko Curuvija Foundation to pay over 1 million dinars to three former RDB officers for damages to their honor and reputation.

Summary

The Second Basic Court in Belgrade ruled that the Slavko Curuvija Foundation must pay former State Security Service officers Miroslav Kurak, Ratko Romic, and Milan Radonjic a total of 1,035,000 dinars. The court awarded each officer 200,000 dinars for harm to their honor and reputation, along with 435,000 dinars to cover legal costs. The officers had sued the Foundation in 2024 over a public statement expressing dissatisfaction with the Court of Appeal's decision to acquit them of the murder of Slavko Curuvija. The Foundation argued that the court failed to consider that the Supreme Court had established serious violations of criminal procedure rules in the acquittal. The Foundation stated that the damages awarded are unprecedented and that the ruling represents continued pressure and silencing of freedom of expression. The Foundation plans to appeal the judgment.
