Comcast is offering payouts in $117.M settlement over data breach – how to find out if you're eligible

New York Post
Comcast agreed to a $117.5 million settlement for a 2023 data breach affecting millions of customers, allowing eligible individuals to seek reimbursement for losses or a cash payment.

Summary

Comcast has agreed to a proposed $117.5 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit stemming from a massive data breach that occurred between October 16 and 19, 2023. The breach, which exposed sensitive customer information, was caused by hackers exploiting a Citrix software vulnerability. The settlement covers individuals in the United States and its territories who were individually notified that their information may have been compromised. Eligible claimants can seek reimbursement for documented losses, compensation for time spent dealing with the breach, or an alternative cash payment estimated at roughly $50. However, the payout amount is not guaranteed and could increase or decrease depending on the number of valid claims filed and deductions for legal fees, administration costs, and other expenses. Lawyers representing the plaintiffs plan to seek as much as one-third of the settlement fund in attorney fees. Comcast has denied wrongdoing, stating that hackers exploited a widely publicized Citrix vulnerability. The settlement agreement pegs the proposed class at approximately 31.7 million individuals who were sent notice letters or emails. Customers who submit claims for documented out-of-pocket expenses can seek up to $10,000 combined for losses and lost time, covering costs such as fraud-related losses, fees for credit freezes or fraud alerts, credit monitoring expenses, and miscellaneous costs. Claimants can also seek compensation for up to five hours of lost time at a rate of $30 per hour.
