PlayStation gamers could get a share of $8 million in a class action settlement — here’s how to know if you’re eligible, and why you shouldn’t expect a big payout
Summary
Sony is paying out a share of nearly $8 million to PlayStation owners in the US as part of a settlement reached in a class action lawsuit in California regarding its digital games sales practices. The lawsuit alleged that Sony violated federal antitrust law by limiting third-party retailers' ability to sell PlayStation game vouchers, effectively monopolizing the market for digital games. While the suit was originally settled in 2024, a new agreement has recently been reached. Sony does not admit any wrongdoing but agrees to provide claimants a share of $7,850,000. Assuming it passes a fairness hearing in October, payouts will be distributed after that date. Eligible customers who bought covered digital games on the PlayStation Network between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, will be included automatically. However, those who have closed their PSN account must contact the settlement team by August 27, 2026, to claim their share. Payouts are expected to be small after legal fees are deducted, but the settlement aims to deter Sony from similar actions in the future. Customers who wish to opt out must do so in writing by July 2, 2026.
