Trader Joe's settlement over receipt data lawsuit could pay customers more than $100
Summary
Trader Joe’s has agreed to a $7.4 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit filed in 2019 concerning its receipt data practices. The lawsuit alleged that the retailer violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act by printing receipts that showed the first six and last four digits of customers’ credit or debit card numbers, exceeding the legally permitted display of the last five digits. Plaintiffs argued this practice increased the risk of identity theft.
Trader Joe’s maintains it has not received reports of identity theft linked to the receipts and stated the issue was limited to certain locations and a small number of transactions. Despite denying wrongdoing, the company opted for a settlement to avoid further legal battles.
If the settlement receives court approval, customers who made purchases between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, using a credit or debit card and received a qualifying receipt could receive a payment of $102.45. A final approval hearing is scheduled for August 2026.
