KLM Airlines Faces Lawsuit After Family Denied Boarding Despite Business Class Tickets
Summary
A family from Tamil Nadu spent ₹49 lakh on business class tickets for a trip to Peru, only to be denied boarding by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. The airline claimed the family lacked the necessary visa, but the family argued they were eligible for visa-free entry based on possessing visas for the USA, UK, Australia, or the Schengen area. After being prevented from boarding, the family was allegedly placed on an internal blacklist, causing issues during subsequent international travel, including questioning about a supposed deportation from Peru and harassment in Australia.
J.S. Sathishkumar, the family’s patriarch and chairman of a medical institution, filed a complaint, leading a Karnataka court to order an FIR against the airline’s CEO and other top officials. Sathishkumar emphasized the case is about accountability, not just a refund, and warned of future incidents if no action is taken.
KLM Airlines maintains it is obligated to follow regulations and that passengers are responsible for ensuring they have the correct travel documents. The court’s order highlights the potential for legal repercussions when airlines deny boarding to passengers who believe they meet all travel requirements.
