Geoje City is providing financial aid and dormitory support to attract and retain workers in its shipbuilding industry.

Summary

Geoje City, South Gyeongsang Province, is continuing its initiatives to combat labor shortages in the shipbuilding sector and encourage young workers to establish themselves in the area. The “Relocation Settlement Support Program for New Shipbuilding Industry Workers,” initiated in 2023, offers up to 3.6 million won over a year to eligible employees of small and medium-sized shipbuilders who have relocated to Geoje. To qualify, applicants must have moved to Geoje after January 1, 2023, and have worked for at least three months, with support ceasing upon resignation or relocation. Fifty recipients will be selected throughout the year.

In addition to settlement funds, the city is also promoting the “2026 Industrial Complex Dormitory Rent Support Program,” which subsidizes up to 80% of monthly rent (maximum 300,000 won) for workers at participating small and medium-sized enterprises for up to 12 months. Eligibility for this program requires enrollment in the four major social insurance programs and less than 10 years of employment, with a minimum of 10% of beneficiaries being new hires with less than one year of experience.

A city official stated, “We hope these programs will help resolve labor shortages at shipbuilders and support workers in settling stably in the region.”
