US lawsuit against Irish-owned FanDuel and gambling rivals is thrown out

A US court dismissed a lawsuit seeking to recoup gambling losses for gamblers from firms like FanDuel, Draftkings, and Caesars Sportsbook.

Summary

A US court has dismissed a lawsuit brought against several gambling firms, including Irish-owned FanDuel, by DC Gambling Recovery, a limited-liability company. The lawsuit attempted to leverage a 300-year-old law, the Statute of Anne, which allows individuals who have lost over $25 in a single gambling session to recover their losses. DC Gambling Recovery claimed no direct connection to individual gamblers and asserted no collusion. FanDuel, co-founded by Northern Ireland native Nigel Eccles and now owned by Flutter Entertainment since 2018, along with Draftkings and Caesars Sportsbook, argued for the case's dismissal. Washington DC’s Attorney General Brian Schwalb also supported dismissal, stating that existing legislation had legalized sports gambling and effectively voided the Statute of Anne. The court agreed, siding with the gambling firms and dismissing the case. Despite the legal victory, Flutter Entertainment’s shares have experienced a significant decline this year, falling almost 14% after releasing disappointing financial results.
