Tinder must pay $60.5 million in class-action settlement. Are you eligible?
Summary
Tinder has agreed to a $60.5 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit, resolving claims that it charged older users more for its Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold subscriptions than younger users. The lawsuit, originally filed in 2015 by Allan Candelore, alleged violations of California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act and Unfair Competition Law. Tinder denies any wrongdoing, but has opted to settle the case to avoid further legal costs and distraction.
Eligible claimants include California residents who purchased Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold on or after March 2, 2015, and were over 29 years old, or those who purchased the subscriptions after March 2, 2016, and were over 28. Those who paid higher prices will receive larger payouts. The deadline to opt out or object is April 8, and the deadline to select a payment method is August 18, with a final approval hearing scheduled for May 20.
Approximately 268,000 California Tinder users are covered by the settlement. Tinder stated that the settlement is “not an admission of guilt or liability” and that they are focused on moving forward and maintaining user trust.
