$5M University of Minnesota data breach class action settlement
Summary
The University of Minnesota has agreed to a $5 million class action settlement to resolve claims stemming from a 2021 data breach of its Legacy Data Warehouse. The breach compromised sensitive personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, and other data, of individuals connected to the university between 1989 and August 10, 2021. Eligible class members—including prospective students, current and former students, employees, and program participants—can claim either a $30 cash payment or 24 months of dark web monitoring.
The lawsuit alleged the university failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures and promptly notify affected individuals. While the University of Minnesota has not admitted wrongdoing, the settlement aims to compensate those impacted by the breach.
The deadline to file a claim is December 24, 2025, and the final approval hearing is scheduled for January 28, 2026. Claim forms and further information are available through Kroll Settlement Administration LLC.
