$12.5M AARP Facebook privacy class action settlement
Summary
AARP has agreed to a $12.5 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging violations of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA). The lawsuit claims AARP shared user information, including video-viewing activity, with Facebook through the Meta Pixel tool. The settlement benefits individuals who requested or obtained video content on AARP.org between September 27, 2020, and September 12, 2025, while having both a Facebook account and an AARP membership or registered user account.
Eligible class members can potentially receive between $47 and $237, depending on the number of claims filed. To receive a payment, a valid claim form must be submitted by December 31, 2025, and may require a Facebook profile link as proof.
In addition to the monetary settlement, AARP has agreed to limit the operation of Meta Pixel on certain video pages of AARP.org to enhance user privacy and comply with VPPA regulations. The final approval hearing is scheduled for February 10, 2026.
