Proposed class action lawsuit targets Amazon over Prime Day deals
Summary
Amazon is facing a class action lawsuit alleging deceptive pricing practices during its Prime Day sales event. The lawsuit, filed by two customers in Washington state, claims Amazon used inflated “list” prices to create the illusion of larger discounts than were actually offered. Examples cited include wireless headphones, a kid’s tablet, and an air fryer, where the advertised discount was based on a price the items hadn’t been sold for recently. Plaintiffs Cathy Armstrong and Oluwa Fosudo allege they were misled into purchasing items based on these false discounts. Armstrong purchased a vacuum and Fosudo purchased Neuriva Brain capsules, both believing they were getting a better deal than was actually the case.
The complaint argues that Amazon intentionally uses these “fake Prime Day Percentage Discounts” to pressure consumers into quick purchases. Amazon has declined to comment on the lawsuit. This legal action follows a recent $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over accusations of tricking customers into Prime memberships and hindering cancellation processes.
Consumer advocate Clark Howard recommends using price comparison tools like ShopSavvy and Camelcamelcamel to verify the authenticity of deals and checking prices at other retailers.
